Welcome, J B. Please tell us about your current release.
Into the Fire is the first book of a new series: The Elements. It follows the journey of self-made millionaire Rob Ashford and the elusive Veronica Clayton as they dive headfirst into the flames. Like its name, this Romance is packed with heat and plenty of heart.

Growing up in a political family, Veronica was governed by a set of rules that revolved around preserving her father’s reputation. She never made a decision for herself or let her emotions reveal her true feelings. When she meets Rob, she discovers parts of herself she had long buried. With him, she wants to test her boundaries and rediscover the woman she once was, and perhaps who she is meant to be. Rob has demons of his own he’s never confronted, until Veronica challenges the choices he’s made. The book is about their path to finding themselves—and each other.

What inspired you to write this book?
In the Lost & Found series, Lucy Chalmers plans the dream wedding of Veronica Clayton and Rob Ashford. I thought it would be interesting to give them a backstory. How did they meet? Why was she the only woman who could break through his hardened demeanor? They provided the inspiration for Into the Fire.

 

Excerpt from Into the Fire:
We soar higher above the ground. The Chicago and Milwaukee skylines are visible in the distance. I lean back into Rob and his arms encircle my waist.

“Do you like to fly?” I ask him.

“I do now.”

My back is to his front so he doesn’t see my smile. I ask Rob if we can take a photo together and he agrees. I hold my phone out and snap a selfie of the two of us. Even without it, this is a moment I will always remember.

As the sun makes a slow descent the sky turns breathtaking shades of pink and gold.

“If only I had a glass of wine to accompany this relaxing ride my night would be complete,” I joke.

“Champagne toast is after we land.”

“Oh, I was kidding.”

“All part of the package,” Glenn says. As we soar with the clouds I glance over at Rob’s profile. He still wears the same serious expression but his posture seems relaxed. I wonder if he ever takes a moment to enjoy simple pleasures. My guess is no. He surprised me with this plan because it seems out of character. He doesn’t strike me as the type of man who makes large gestures or plans elaborate romantic evenings. It makes me realize I don’t know him at all. Or else he’s painting a picture of who he wants me to see: a workaholic who doesn’t have time for love. But it seems there is more to the man than he’s let on. For someone who claims not be a romantic, this is by far the most romantic date I’ve ever been on. And I suspect no date will be able to top this night–ever. Rob has set the bar high, which means there is that much further to fall.

 

What exciting story are you working on next?
I’m working on the next book in The Elements series, Into the Light. This is a three-part series of which I’ve completed one book. I always debate if I should hold off and release them all at once, but I get too excited once I finish a manuscript that I can’t wait. Into the Light follows Jeremy McAllister, Rob Ashford’s closest friend and business partner. Readers learned he has a stormy past. They’ll find out more about it and why he’s so jaded when it comes to love.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’ve always loved to write, but I didn’t consider myself a writer until I published my first novel, Out in the Open, in 2014. I don’t think you need to publish a book to be considered a writer. But in my case, that was the start of my journey. It inspired me to start a blog and I’ve written four books since with many more planned. I have lots of ideas in my head, now I just need to get them down on paper!

Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I’m a Marketer by day but by night I put pen to paper. I’d love to write full-time but I’m not at the point where I can make a career out of it. But a girl can dream! Given I have a day job people always ask me how I find the time to write. It comes down to prioritizing and making time for the things that are important to us. And sometimes sacrificing sleep.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I wouldn’t say I have any particular quirks. I do most of my writing at night. There’s just something about the atmosphere I find more inspiring. And I always have a notebook on hand to jot down thoughts as they come to me. Often times I use old school notebooks from my kids. I’m an avid recycler and I hate that they come home at the end of the year with so many pages unfilled. Rather than throw them away I reuse them.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a doctor. It sounds great in theory, but I hate the sight of blood. And I have a fear of needles and really any sort of medical tools. That kind of put a damper on those plans.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
One of the key reasons I write is because it makes me happy. I seriously get an endorphin rush after I have a breakthrough or finish a chapter. Some people get that rush from exercise, mine comes from creativity. (Kind of wish the working out thing did it for me). And I hope, in turn, my writing makes others happy and offers them a brief escape from the daily stresses of life. I agree with the sentiment that happiness is contagious. And in today’s world especially, I think we need more of it. I’ll end with a quote that inspires me, and I hope it inspires you too.
