Excerpt from The Journey from Manuscript to Print:
The long road from manuscript to printed book can be daunting for aspiring authors. You have poured your heart and soul into your masterpiece, but how do you actually get it published? As a publisher, I have seen many writers struggle to navigate the publishing process. This unknown territory is often the biggest hurdle between completing a manuscript and holding your published book in your hands.
The process is complex, with many steps and players involved. It’s difficult to know where to start or who to turn to for advice. Most authors only publish one or two books in their lifetime, so they are learning as they go. Meanwhile, publishers see hundreds of books through each phase of development. This disparity of knowledge puts writers at a disadvantage.
It is frustrating and disheartening to realize how much work remains after your manuscript is “done.” Editing, proofreading, formatting, cover design, printing, distribution—the list goes on. You thought the hard part was behind you, but the road stretches endlessly ahead.
The good news is you don’t have to figure it all out alone. As a publisher, I can offer guidance through each stage, drawing on decades of experience. I want to demystify the process for you, so you can bring your book to market successfully. I organized the book with brief chapters for easy reference, but not necessarily in chronological order, since you are often doing multiple tasks simultaneously.
Your manuscript deserves to become the professional, polished book you have always envisioned. Let’s get started!
What exciting project are you working on next?
I am still in the early planning stages. I am working on a mystery series about a female detective and her true crime podcast friend that find themselves in precarious situations.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I am a publisher and have worked in the industry for over 30 years, but I didn’t really consider myself a writer until my most recent book came out.
Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your workday like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
My workday is busy reading manuscripts and working on my author’s books. I absolutely LOVE what I do, but I have to get very creative finding time to write. I have sections in the book about time blocking, pomodoro technique, and other techniques to help writers block the time for their creative endeavors. My favorite if the Pomodoro Technique.
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes long, separated by short breaks. This method can help authors focus during writing sessions while also incorporating periodic breaks to recharge.
To use the Pomodoro Technique for writing:
- Choose a task, such as writing a section of your book. Set a 25-minute timer.
- Work on the task until the timer rings. Avoid distractions and stay focused.
- When the timer rings, take a short 3–5-minute break. Stretch, grab a drink, or take a walk.
- After the break, reset the timer for another 25-minute writing session.
- Complete 3-4 pomodoros. After your 3-4 focused sessions, take a longer break, from 15 to 30 minutes.
- Start the process over, beginning with step 1.
The timed sessions help writers focus intensely while the scheduled breaks ensure they don’t burn out. This rhythm of concentrated spurts followed by relaxation allows authors to be productive while also caring for their mental wellbeing. With practice, the Pomodoro Technique can help authors establish a regular writing routine amidst the demands of their busy lives.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
My writing quirk includes clichés. I am trying to break myself of this habit or quirk, so I am reaching other ways to say a common cliché. For example,
Cliché: Better late than never. Alternative: It’s better to finish than to leave it undone, Timeliness is crucial, but completion matters more
Cliché: Think outside the box. Alternative: Approach it creatively, Innovate beyond the usual, Explore unconventional ideas
Cliché: In the nick of time. Alternative: Just in time, At the last possible moment, With seconds to spare
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I loved reading and wanted to read as a job. I am so glad that I figured out a career where I get to read every day.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Nothing else. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I really appreciate it.
