Author Kirby Ann is chatting with me today about her new suspense crime thriller, Power in Justice.
Bio:
Kirby Ann has always been captivated by the world of literature. From a young age, her love for reading laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for storytelling. It wasn’t until her twenties that she took up writing seriously, embarking on a journey of self-expression.
Away from writing, she finds joy on trips with friends and family, drawing inspiration from the new landscapes and cultures she encounters. When in need of a break, she immerses herself in the world of online gaming, finding both relaxation and creativity in the virtual realms.
In 2023, she took a bold step forward, deciding to share her works on a larger scale. As her professional writing career takes its first steps, she is filled with optimism and high hopes for the future. With a unique blend of Texas spirit, a love for storytelling, and a supportive network, she looks forward to weaving more tales that resonate with readers and leave a lasting impact.
Welcome, Kirby. Please tell us about your current release.
My current book, Power in Justice, picks up right where book two, Power in Vengeance ended. Ben O’Hare Jr. ambushed Andrea in the park and took a shot at her which is a big no go. It sets the scene for the start of the book. Throughout the rest of the story, the DeLaney Mob deals with a bad batch of drugs, the O’Hare Mafia stepping out of line, and a mayor who’s gotten a little too big for his britches. While all that is going on, Andrea has her newly formed relationship with Valerie to balance and figure out. They have a lot going on between them. One of my favorite parts about this book is the reader gets Scarlett’s perspective for the first time.
What inspired you to write this book?
This is the third book in the series, and I’ve fallen in love with the characters and the city. The story hasn’t felt like it’s over. It still doesn’t. One day the series will end, just not yet.
Excerpt from Power in Justice:
“Hey, Bosslady,” Cruz said with a big smile on his face.
Maybe this wasn’t bad news after all. “Hey,” she said, pulling her jacket around her better. It was colder inside than it was outside.
“We heard about what happened yesterday,” Derek said, looking her over to see if he could see any injuries. “Looks like you’re doing better than reported.”
She raised a brow. “Oh yeah?”
“According to Charlie down at the donut shop you got shot and are in a coma.” He tried to keep a straight face, but the second she smirked Derek burst out laughing.
“I’m going to say Charlie isn’t a very good informant.”
“Yeah well that dude makes some bomb donuts, so he gets a pass on his gossip skills,” Derek said and looked at Cruz.
“It’s not his fault. No one ever knows the truth about you, Bosslady,” Cruz said with a shrug. He moved beside Derek at the back door of the van. “Might want to step back.” He gave her a head nod to tell her to go back further when she only took one step back.
Her hand was on her gun at her back just in case. They pulled open the doors to reveal what looked like over a dozen plastic storage containers. “What’s inside?” she asked, but then the smell hit her and she knew exactly what it was. “Where did this come from?”
What exciting project are you working on next?
Books four and five are done and being edited. But the exciting one that I’m working on right now is the spinoff series to The DeLaney Mob Series. I’m calling it The Streets of Berkland Series. The books in this new series will showcase stories of people from all around Berkland and how their paths cross or interact with the mobs and mafias. It’s really fun for me and my hope is the readers also enjoy the experience of seeing life on the other side.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I think when I started getting a following on a fanfiction site that I still like to write on. The readers there make me feel excited and loved. I have some great friends/fans who review and send me messages all the time. That kind of support goes a long way to giving a writer motivation and confidence to keep going.
Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your workday like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
Unfortunately, I have a real-world job in the transportation industry. I would love to be able to write full time because it really is my passion. Maybe someday I’ll get to the point where my books can support me. For now, I write when and where I can…even if that means sneaking a little in on the clock. Just don’t tell my boss.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I don’t know if it’s a quirk, but my books don’t follow the normal storyline mechanics that a lot of writers do. You know, the rising action, climax, resolution or the meet, date, conflict, breakup, get back together narrative. I like that about my books and I like to read other author’s books that break away from the mainstream.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an astronaut. I think looking at the earth or moon from space would be one of the most amazing things in the world.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to read my books, and a very special thank you to those who take the time to leave a review. I love hearing what people have to say about the books.
