Children’s book author Courtney Reames Haydell is chatting with me today about her new children’s book, When the Red Bird Flies.
Bio:
Courtney Reames Haydell had an extraordinary childhood filled with love, family, faith, and bon temps (good times). As the youngest of the six children to Bonnie and Michael Reames, she, like all her siblings, had a strong and unique bond with her parents. The grief upon their passing left a deep void which she is slowly filling by recreating many traditions and making new memories with her family. Courtney takes great delight in bringing the entire family together, which has grown to 25 and counting. She wrote this book hoping it would help other children find comfort even in the face of great loss. She resides in Texas with her loving husband, two high-spirited sons, and an English Bulldog who’s also one of the boys.
What do you enjoy most about writing short stories/children’s books/novellas?
I love seeing children read and watching them smile or laugh while reading makes my heart so happy!
Can you give us a little insight into a few of your short stories – perhaps some of your favorites?
My favorites are: Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, and The Ugly Duckling
What genre are you inspired to write in the most? Why?
Children – I love having my boys grow up reading my stories that will carry on to their children.
What exciting story are you working on next?
We have some things in the works. Can’t wait to share soon!
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Since this is my first book, I would consider myself a writer as of November 2023.
How do you research markets for your work, perhaps as some advice for writers?
This book is about the grief of children. I feel there is so much children’s grief in the world and not many books and resources that children can relate to.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
When writing I must have a sweet tea in a non-sweat cup and something salty.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a Flight Attendant and travel the world. I was fortunate enough to make my dreams come true at 20 years old flying for American Airlines until September 11th happened.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Thank you for reading this interview. I hope you all love the book and that your children love it too.
