What do you enjoy most about writing children’s books?
What I enjoy most is hearing back from parents and their joy when reading to their loved ones. I also love getting an idea for a book and watching the story come to life.
Can you give us a little insight into a few of your short stories – perhaps some of your favorites?
People always ask me if I have a favorite book, which is hard to say because I love each story’s message for the readers. My latest book, Boomer the Curious Bunny, is about enjoying learning and being curious about the world around you. Harry the Camel is all about loving yourself just the way you are. Depending on the story, the message would be about loving yourself just the way you are, kindness, peace, and imagination.
My YA book, Rise A Girl’s Struggle for More, takes place in the 1920s. It is about a young girl who had big dreams for herself at a time when most girls were to marry and raise a family. She stops at nothing to make her dreams come true.
What genre are you inspired to write in the most? Why?
I am most inspired to write for children because it is natural for me. I have a degree in elementary education and have enjoyed working with young children. I love their zest for life learning and their curiosity.
What exciting story are you working on next?
I am working on two short story series for young readers, Sarah Jane’s Adventures and The Moonling Adventures. I am super excited about them.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I have always been a storyteller, and eventually, I decided to put my stories to print; that was the day I made new business cards that stated I was an author, and that was the day my writing journey began.
How do you research markets for your work, perhaps as some advice for writers?
I spend my time writing and am very fortunate to have Creative Edge and Abundantly Social helping me in this department. I am deeply grateful for them.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I like to think about how my character experiences things. So, for example, I walked down a trail where I knew lots of bunnies were in the early morning to get a feel for what they would see going down the path.
When working in the 1920s, I would put on music from that time to get in the mood for that period.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a young child, I wanted to be a teacher. By the time high school came, I wanted to be a singer and actress. I am blessed because I have achieved all of those goals.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
I recommend getting a publicist and social media expert for any authors wishing to have their books known. It has made all the difference in the world for me.
