Interview with historical authors Frank Hood and Charles Hood

I have two special guests today. Authors Frank Hood and Charles Hood to chat about their newest US Submarine Force history book, Sub Tales – Stories That Seldom Surfaced.

You can learn more about the authors as they tour with RABT book tours. Tour stops are listed below.

Bio:
Frank Hood was a Naval Officer who volunteered and served aboard a brand new nuclear submarine during the height of the Cold War.

Charles Hood is a physician, and Frank’s brother. He is an excellent wordsmith and wrote all 7 of our books. The first book is Frank’s story (Poopie Suits & Cowboy Boots), the other 6 are stories contributed by other sub vets and independent research on tips of unusual and unknown events.

Welcome, Frank. Welcome, Charles. Please tell us about your current release.
Sub Tales is packed with real life history, drama, unexpected emergencies, and tales from the rich, but silent, history of the US Submarine Force from its founding in 1900 until the present. It was #1 for a long time on Amazon’s Cold War Biography genre list.

What inspired you to write this book? After our first book about the unclassified funny and dangerous stories from Frank’s time on the USS Seahorse (SSN 669), many sub vets contacted us and said here are more stories you need to publish. Charles researched all of them, adding historical context, and vetted them with a panel of 12 sub vets for accuracy and completeness.

Excerpt from Sub Tales – Stories That Seldom Surfaced:
The story of Joe Rocek, an ordinary American who volunteered for duty aboard submarines in WWII is the stuff of true American heroes. His boat was sunk but he survived. He was picked up and taken to a Japanese base for interrogation and torture. He survived that and was put on a Japanese carrier to be taken to a POW camp on the main island. That carrier was sunk by another US submarine, and he survived that. He also survived the POW camp and returned home and lived a normal life. Not many knew of his heroic story and indomitable will to survive. There are many more fascinating details to this story.

What exciting project are you working on next?
Sub Tales 4 will be out in the Fall time frame.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Did not until prompted by Charles to write my story.

Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your workday like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
No for both of us this is a part time endeavor.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Charles is an excellent word smith and adds historical context to each story.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Lots of different occupations.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
These books are all highly acclaimed – over 480 International Reviews on Amazon, 85% 4 or 5 Star. They also document the real stories of the US Submarine Force, not fictionalized narratives.
