Bio:
Naomi D. Nakashima is a bestselling author of nonfiction, a ghostwriter with 20 years’ experience, a trained psychotherapist, and a TikTok writing coach with thousands of followers who attend her coaching events and regular Q&As. Everything I Need to Know About Parenting I Learned from Watching Star Trek, her first book published under her name, became an international Amazon bestseller and stayed on the bestseller list for step-parenting and blended families for three years.

As a single mother of two, Naomi daydreams about spending her free time reading books, diamond painting, and traveling the world.

Welcome, Naomi. Please tell us about your current release.
Write Out Loud is meant to help authors who might be struggling with the writing process learn how to identify some of the fears they might be feeling and build some skills for overcoming those fears, understanding that those fears are normal, and ultimately learning how to overcome them and get their story written.

What inspired you to write this book?
After working for 20 years as a ghostwriter, I’ve heard just about every fear and any author might have about approaching their book. There are a lot of books out there that will help you write and publish your book, and I always knew that I wanted to share my own advice on that as well. But I wanted to do it different; I wanted to do it in a way that made the reader feel like I was cheering them on from behind the scenes, because I am.

What exciting project are you working on next?
I always seem to have something in the works. Right now, in addition to my client work, I am working on another nonfiction book designed to help people launch a freelance ghostwriting business, and I’m dusting off some of my old fiction WIPs to get some of them shiny and working again.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
This is kind of a loaded question, I don’t really remember a time when I didn’t love writing. But up until about 10 years ago, I believed what everyone around me was telling me (that writing wasn’t a real job, that it was just a hobby, that you can’t really make a living writing). After I tried to quit freelance writing and went back to school for a master’s degree, I learned that I still really loved writing and if that’s how I wanted to make my living, then who cares if someone else thought it was just a hobby?

Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your workday like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I do! I survive through time blocking and writing sprints.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I don’t know if it’s interesting, really. But I am really bad at titles. It takes me a long time to come up with anything I like and make it stick. So my files on my computer all have names as if they were Friends episodes: “the one with the vampire in Seattle,” “the one at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire,” “The one with the time-traveling librarian.”

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a science officer on the USS Enterprise.
