Interview with contemporary Christian romance author JC Miller

Author JC Miller is chatting with me today about her new women’s contemporary Christian fiction romance, Something About Ruth.

JC is doing a virtual book tour with RABT Book Tours and PR. See the full list of tour stops and details below!

Bio:
JC Miller is a freshly anointed, faith-based author who uses her childhood experiences in the Bronx, New York, to capture the soul of inner-city living. As a former student of Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute and a graduate of the Te’Hillah School of Urban Ministry, Miller utilizes her studies to intertwine pop culture with divine accounts of biblical characters. Through sharing these stories, her goals are to encourage people to study the bible and not make it complicated, to view themselves through the lives of those characterized, and to find healing in Christ.

JC Miller co-founded a publishing company, Jess, Mo’ Books, with her childhood friend, M.R. Spain. Together, these ladies are creating fresh content to uplift, educate, and motivate women through blogs, social media groups, and a yearly online magazine.

Welcome, JC. Please tell us about your current release.
After hurricane Katrina, three ordinary strangers experience significant loss. Each must rebuild. Fate brings them all together in a turnaround of events that further tests their survival and faith. Without giving all the details away, I’ll say that:

Naomi is a bitter mother recently widowed.

Ruth is a young woman, navigating her way through life in the Bronx without any parental guidance.

Boaz is a promising young entrepreneur, sheltering his heart.

Just like the biblical version, Something About Ruth leans on the promise that God is at work through the rough times as well as through each and every aspect of the day, bringing everything together for His good. Which is what I want my readers to take away from all of my books. God’s faithfulness.

What inspired you to write this book?
As a new believer, Ruth was my favorite book of the Bible–I have multiple ones now. But Ruth was a small book delivering a BIG punch. It also was easy to read…and it resembled a romance.

Around five years ago, I started retelling biblical stories with a modern urban era twist–Ruth has always been on my agenda.

Excerpt from Something About Ruth:
The high-pitched night song of the cicadas never seemed that haunting before. Their chirping was as noticeable as one’s breath, against the quiet of the after-storm. Used to the violent sounds of the inner-city Wards, most of us had never heard cicadas put on such a clatter. The sound was a deafening reminder to everyone crowded like sardines in the Superdome that the world around us continued, and we were blessed to be amongst the living. It was our lives that would never be the same.

What exciting project are you working on next?
I’m excited to say that I start film writing classes at the end of this month. I really want to bring these characters to the big scene.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’ve loved writing and telling stories all of my life! My first book, I Am Rahab: A Novel was published in 2018 and quickly became a trilogy. I wrote the manuscript while caring for my mom, who was in hospice. When she passed, I realized that I had a complete book and wanted to share the characters that I engulfed myself with during that time of grief. Writing was my therapy. I rediscovered my love for writing then and claimed the title of a literary artist.

Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your workday like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
No, I do not write full time. However, I would love to. This book took around a year to write–completely on my cell phone, in very short segments while on breaks during work. I am a retired Verizon communication worker. I now work as a Personal Care Professional for intellectually disabled adults. So, I write when I can.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I write by the seat of my pants–and I feel as the Holy Spirit relates.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A triple threat, lol. I wanted to be a writer, news anchor, and singer.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Yes, my business partner/friend and I, along with a team of creatives are taking on a new direction with our blogs. We are including an advice column and modern etiquette piece–along with a few more surprises. We are revamping our magazine and considering LIVE Bible studies and readings.
