Novelist David M. Goldenberg joins me today to chat about his new espionage, The Scenturion Spy.
Bio:
David M. Goldenberg, Sc.D., M.D., is a physician-scientist, author, and philanthropist who spent more than 50 years conducting cancer research, while holding professorial positions on the faculties of five medical schools. He founded Immunomedics, Inc., a biotechnology company developing monoclonal antibodies for cancer imaging and therapy. Immunomedics developed Trodelvy®, a potent antibody-drug conjugate as a selective cancer treatment; it has been approved in the U.S. and several foreign countries for the treatment of certain advanced cancers. Dr. Goldenberg became interested in the sense of smell, the major focus of this novel, during his graduate school studies at the University of Erlangen and Heidelberg in Germany. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago.

What inspired you to write this book?
The science of this book is authentic, representing research I have conducted. The protagonist is my alter-ego, but the plots involving espionage and romance are of course fiction.
What exciting project are you working on next?
I am completing sequels to this first book, he second expected to appear in late spring of 2023.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I have published almost 1,000 scientific papers, which have been cited over 60,000-times in the medical literature. Upon retirement a few years ago, the memoir I started turned into this novel.
Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your workday like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
My composing is mostly in the late evening/early morning, when my subconscious thinking often takes over. I then write the text during the following days, but not in a strict time plan. I am also engaged in lecturing and reviewing scientific articles. My major hobby is oil painting.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Delving into the unconscious thoughts of my characters, sometimes taking plots in many different directions.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A judge.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
I am intrigued how my subconscious thoughts when trying to sleep consume me and my stories. It stimulates me to attempt to learn about thought processes during subconscious periods – our neurons are busy independent of our conscious thoughts.
