Interview with dark fiction author Cindy Kovacik

cover for my daddy the serial killerHelping me wrap up the week is dark fiction author Cindy Kovacik. We’re chatting about her new horror/thriller, My Daddy, the Serial Killer.

Bio:
Words cannot express how much I love the horror genre. I have finally accomplished a lifelong goal of writing a horror novel and getting it published. It took a long time and a lot of hard work but was worth it in the end. I am a 41-year-old mother who likes to push herself to always do better and work harder. Now that I have a published book, I would like to start writing book #2. My biggest influences have been Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe. I have been reading and writing since I was a little girl and I hope to continue as I get older and wiser.

Welcome, Cindy. Please tell us about your current release.
This book is a horror/thriller about a daughter finding out that her father is a serial killer. It’s unique because it’s shown through her eyes and is more about her life as she grows up knowing what she knows and seeing what she sees.

What inspired you to write this book?
The title came to me first. I’ve always wanted to write a horror novel and once I thought of the title, the rest of the book just flowed.

Excerpt from My Daddy, the Serial Killer:
Katelyn Deason was naïve and innocent at six years old. But she made the mistake of descending those cellar steps . . . the residence of horror.

You see, her father wasn’t who she thought he was. He wasn’t the loving, “normal” daddy all the other kids had. He was different. Katelyn soon realizes just how different as the years pass and unspeakable things begin to happen.

What exciting project are you working on next?
Strangely, I also just published a children’s early reader chapter book titled, Chicken in the City. It is the first in a series and is an adventure story. The second book in the series will be released in 2023. I am also working on writing another horror novel.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I was in sixth grade I used to write these long scary stories with all of my friends in them. They were slasher type stories so, of course, most of my friends would not make it to the end of the book alive. But they all loved my stories and I caught the writing bug at that time.

Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I work a full time job from home and I also raise two young daughters so it’s hard sometimes finding time to write every day. But I do try to carve out twenty minutes a day, if possible, and write as much as I can.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
With my writing I always have to write out a timeline first. It’s almost like a script of they do this first and then this and then this. I like structure and this helps me see where my story is going.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be the youngest country singer and also a writer. I am now a writer and I still sing, just not professionally.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Keep writing! I always thought it was just a far-fetched dream to be published but now I’ve gotten two of my books published so far. You can really accomplish your dreams if you work hard.
