Bio:
Kate Brenton, author, teacher, and mother, helps women connect the dots between their purpose and their passion. Her first book Rebirth: Real-life stories about what happens when you let go and let life lead hit #1 on Amazon for New Thought, and can also be found at your favorite bookseller. Once a high school English teacher, Kate spent seven years in Hawaii learning holistic healing and now braids the power of story — whether in the bones or on the page — to inspire and uplift. She teaches online classes and retreats for spiritual development and inspiration. She also hosts a cohort, Sit & Write for mission-led authors.
Welcome, Kate. Please tell us about your current release.
When life is calling, often we need only the space and the support to remember our way. Sometimes we lean into our expansion, and sometimes we bolt from our greatness. The biggest shock is that big change happens in small choices. In Rebirth you will find real-life stories of people who made courageous leaps, inspiring you to make your own. It’s time to step out of line and back into the spiral of life—that’s where the alchemy is. This book fits right into the side pocket of your bag + your life to inspire you as you read others’ stories of how they listened and learned to make embodied changes in their own lives.
What inspired you to write this book?
Rebirth began as a podcast when I was postpartum with my son. At 41, I was accustomed to being out and seeing clients in the world, and when I chose to change my work to stay home, a friend suggested a podcast. Rebirth started with the saying: Women saving lives, by living their own. Over seasons, the stories and bandwidth expanded, but kept the core tenant of asking people about the moment in their lives they leaned in on their intuition to create a life that was calling. My publisher and i realized these were the very stories we needed now, of faith and fortitude in a time of change, and Rebirth was born.
Excerpt from Rebirth:
“Somewhere around David Newman’s chapter, I realized this book that was created as a resource for others was serving as a mosaiced memoir of my own rebirth. A placing of shards, of stories and journeys, of questions and tools, of triumph and resurrection, of service and doubt—all placed alongside each other, dancing in the light of lines and spirals. You cannot separate brokenness from brilliance. You cannot have leaps without falls. Life is not linear; it’s a spiral of opposites in Nature’s magnificent design.”
What exciting project are you working on next?
I currently share my writing on Substack; I am working with a cohort of mission-led authors to write their own first draft. I have created a writing container that tends to both the spiritual and analytical side of writing called Sit & Write. I co-teach it with my book marketing colleague twice a year.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
My first journal had Lucy from Peanuts in it and I was lamenting on missing my morning cartoons. I have either been writing or reading my whole life, and have taught writing in some format for two decades. Yet, I was still surprised at the freedom of having published, and going from someday being an author to it becoming a reality.
Do you write full-time? If so, what’s your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I am a mother of a 5-year-old and an entrepreneur. I write in the early morning now, when the house is still asleep. If I don’t catch those early thoughts, it is much harder for me. My work is a combination of teaching writers and holistic healing work. They are really one in the same: I work with stories.
Finding time to write the book was not an easy feat for me. It is one thing to journal and write short form, which I do for myself and for publication, but writing without freedom of time, taught me a lot about discipline, planning and honoring when it was time to put the pen down, and realign with intent. I am even more proud of this book since it didn’t happen at the easiest of life phases, and I say that for other writers to know it can happen.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Great question. I will work a piece through in my head for quite a while and then some organizing idea comes flying through, unexpectedly and away from my desk. I catch it on a scrap of paper and get it out the next morning.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Outside and with dogs. It wasn’t a vocation per se. I did always have a book with me.
Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Celebrate yourself more.
